Run like a Champion
Something not understood by many runners
--good pros and amateurs alike--
is that it's possible for anyone regardless
of physical ability or skill to run like a champion.
Ability level or handicap aside,
certain qualities--confidence, attitude, self-control,
etiquette, and sportsmanship--determine the "level" at which one performs.
A slow runner who observes the rules of the race,
who can hold his head up regardless of his finish;
who displays anger only in the realm of chastising
or spurring himself to better performance,
who wishes the best for his opponents as well as himself,
who displays true sportsmanship, and who in general has a
deep understanding of who he is and how running truly fits
into the scheme of things certainly is on a higher plane
than the very fast runner who cuts corners as he sees fit,
who makes excuses, who is unsportsmanlike,
who lacks emotional or self-control, and who in general
doesn't understand why he is running
or what his ultimate goal truly is.
